Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Quit Number?

Your Quit Number is the total amount of money you need invested to cover your living expenses forever, without ever needing a paycheck. It's based on the 4% rule: your annual expenses divided by 0.04 (or multiplied by 25). Once your investments reach this number, you can quit your job and live off investment returns.

How much money do I need to retire early?

It depends on your annual expenses. A common rule of thumb is 25 times your yearly spending. If you spend $40,000 per year, you need $1,000,000 invested. If you spend $60,000, you need $1,500,000. Our free calculator gives you your exact number in 60 seconds based on your real expenses, income, and savings.

What is the 4% rule?

The 4% rule comes from the 1998 Trinity Study. It found that retirees who withdraw 4% of their portfolio in the first year (adjusting for inflation each year after) have a very high probability of their money lasting 30+ years. It's the foundation of most financial independence calculations, including Quit Number.

What is the FIRE movement?

FIRE stands for Financial Independence, Retire Early. It's a movement of people aggressively saving and investing — typically 50-70% of their income — to retire decades before the traditional age of 65. There are several approaches including Lean FIRE, Fat FIRE, Barista FIRE, and Coast FIRE, each with different trade-offs between frugality and lifestyle.

How is my Quit Number calculated?

We take your monthly expenses, multiply by 12 to get annual expenses, then divide by 0.04 (the safe withdrawal rate). Your Quit Score shows what percentage of the way there you are. Your Quit Date projects when you'll hit your number based on your current savings rate and a 7% average annual return.

Is this calculator really free?

Yes, completely free. No credit card, no hidden fees, no paywall. You get your Quit Number, Quit Score, and Quit Date in 60 seconds. We're building optional Pro features (expense tracking, Monte Carlo simulations, multiple scenarios), but the core calculator will always be free.
